Introduction
Secondary Assessment
The Secondary Assessment is a view of the patients’ entire body. Not all situations
require a Secondary Assessment. You can begin a Secondary Assessment when the
patient does not require life-saving care, you have time, the patient has more than
one injury, you have to transport them to the hospital yourself or medical help is
going to be delayed 20 minutes or more. The Secondary Assessment consists of:
1. The History
2. The Vital signs
3. Head-to-Toe exam
4. First Aid Treatment
Ongoing Patient Care
You must continually reassess your patient until they are turned over to the Para-
medics (EMS). Regularly reassess their:
• Level of consciousness
• Airway –Breathing-Circulation
• Note any general changes
Reassure the patient, treat them for shock . Listen and try to address your patients’
concerns. Take steps to protect their modesty and do not leave them alone.
Transfer to EMS
When the Paramedics ( EMS) arrive you must be able to provide them a current ac-
count of the condition of the patient, what treatments you have performed and any
other information that may be important.
