TRAINING AND EDUCATION

HeartSafe offers a full complement of accredited courses that are approved for all workplaces and organizations in accordance with the WSIB Regulation 1101, Health Canada, Canada Labour Code and The 2016 Canadian Consensus Guidelines on First Aid & CPR.

If you are seeking more advanced training, are an experienced health care provider or have purchased a defibrillator for your organization you may benefit most from one of our First Responder or Experienced Provider courses.

All First Aid courses include a CPR/AED component. Courses range from four to sixteen hours in length and can be scheduled daytime, evening or weekend. Whatever type of organization, HeartSafe has the right first aid course for you.

CPR courses address life threatening emergencies such as cardiac arrest and choking. CPR training teaches you what to do until the ambulance arrives by restoring blood flow, using an AED and relieving choking.

First Responder courses are for those who arrive first in your organization with an AED, oxygen or who may have to manage a traumatic injury in a hazardous environment while waiting for the ambulance.

Respiratory Fit Testing is designed for those who are required to wear a tight fitting respirator, including N95 respirators to protect themselves from hazards associated with infectious agents, dusts, mists, fibres, fumes and bioaerosols.

Emergency First Aid & CPR-C

Time Required: 8 Hours (including breaks and lunch)

This course combines adult,child & infant CPR along with the recognition and treatment of medical emergencies and traumatic injuries.  Modules include shock, bleeding and wound care, burns, head and spinal management along with diabetic emergencies, seizures, asthma and allergic reactions. Course provides the steps for relief of choking for adults,children & infants. Includes hands on component for use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

 

Standard First Aid & CPR-C

Time Required: 16 Hours (including breaks and lunch)

This is the minimum course required to achieve compliance under the Occupational Health and Safety Act, WSIB Ontario, Health Canada Labour Code & the Child Care and Early Years Act, 2014 (Ontario).

The Standard First Aid with CPR-C course combines adult, child and infant CPR along with the recognition and treatment of medical emergencies and traumatic injuries.  Modules include shock, bleeding and wound care, burns, head and spinal management along with diabetic emergencies, seizures, asthma and allergic reactions; shock, bleeding, burns, diabetic emergencies, seizures, asthma and allergic reactions & Epi-Pen use. Course provides the steps for relief of choking for adult, children and infants. Includes hands on component for use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).  First Aid topics for bone and joint injuries, head/spinal injuries, heat/cold injuries, poisons, bites, stings and eye injuries are included in this comprehensive program.

 

Standard First Aid & CPR-C Renewal (within 3 years from original 2 Day course)

Time Required: 8 Hours

This is the course required of employers to achieve workplace compliance under the Occupational Health and Safety Act and WSIB.

The Standard First Aid with CPR-C Renewal course combines adult, and child CPR along with the recognition and treatment of medical emergencies and traumatic injuries.  Modules include shock, bleeding and wound care, burns, head and spinal management along with diabetic emergencies, seizures, asthma and allergic reactions; shock, bleeding, burns, diabetic emergencies, seizures, asthma and allergic reactions. Course provides the steps for relief of choking for adult, children and infants. Includes hands on component for use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

 

Childcare First Aid & CPR

Time Required: 4 Hours

This course combines adult and child CPR and choking procedures (responsive and unresponsive), along with the recognition and treatment of medical emergencies and traumatic injuries as related to common childhood emergencies such as anaphylaxis, asthma, concussions, bleeding  and seizures.  This course is ideal for volunteers, group homes and community organizations who are not regulated under the Child Care and Early Years Act (Ontario).

Basic First Aid & CPR

Time Required: 4 Hours

This course combines adult and child CPR along with the recognition and treatment of medical emergencies and injuries.  Adult/Child Choking (responsive and unresponsive); CPR barrier device and pocket mask. A defibrillator (AED) demonstration is included in the course.  First Aid components include discussions on the early recognition and treatment of  shock, bleeding and wound care, burns, head and spinal management along with diabetic emergencies, seizures, asthma and allergic reactions.

HeartSaver CPR-A

Time Required: 2 Hours

The Heartsaver course covers one rescuer Adult/Child CPR or Child/Infant CPR, (technique differences between adult/child/infant resuscitation are highlighted); Adult/Child Choking (responsive and unresponsive); CPR barrier device and pocket mask. A defibrillator (AED) demonstration is included in the course.

Heartsaver CPR-B 

Time Required: 2.5 Hours

The Heartsaver course covers one rescuer  Adult, Infant & Child CPR (technique differences between adult/child/infant resuscitation are highlighted); Adult ,Infants & Child Infant Choking (responsive and unresponsive); CPR barrier device and pocket mask. A defibrillator (AED) demonstration is included in the course.

Heartsaver CPR-C/AED

Time Required: 3.5 Hours

The Heartsaver course covers one rescuer Adult, Child & Infant CPR; Adult, Child & Infant Choking (responsive and unresponsive); CPR barrier device and pocket mask. Includes hands on practice component for use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

Audience: General Public/Lay Rescuers, Public Access Defibrillation Awareness

Health Care Provider (HCP CPR-C)

Time Required: 4.0 Hours

The BLS for Healthcare Provider (C) course skills taught are 1- and 2-rescuer adult, child and infant cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), choking, hands-on automated external defibrillator (AED) training and the use of bag valve mask (BVM). The course is designed for healthcare providers who need a credentialed course and is also open to first responders who have a duty to respond to a cardiac emergency because of job responsibilities or regulatory requirements.

Health Care-Experienced Provider CPR  (HCP CPR-C EP)

Time Required: 7.0 Hours

The core objective of the Health Care-Experienced Provider program is to provide a practical approach to the evaluation and management of the first 10 minutes of an adult cardiac arrest.

The Health Care-Experienced Provider course is a comprehensive program designed to provide training on airway management, airway adjuncts, Bag Valve Mask use and Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to Health Care Providers.

Includes hands-on practice; one-to-one mentoring, problem solving & feedback.

The core practical components include:

  • Airway management
  • Airway adjuncts & suctioning
  • Ventilation & oxygenation
  • Automatic external defibrillation

The course is designed for those frontline Health Care Providers (s) who may be part of a resuscitation team that responds professionally to cardiac arrest, and require a credentialed course. 

AED for Targeted Responders

Time Required: 3 Hours

Includes AED Hands-On Practice with the exact AED model you have onsite; troubleshooting your specific AED machine; one-to-one mentoring and feedback. The AED Targeted Responder course will cover the use of an AED, special conditions and problem solving.

The course is designed for those who volunteer to become Targeted Responders within their business or organization(s). 

Audience: Targeted Responders

Must have current CPR certification within the past 1 year

Heartsaver AED & CPR-C for Targeted Responders

Time Required: 6 Hours

The Heartsaver AED & CPR is a comprehensive program designed to strengthen the Chain of Survival and provide training on Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) to targeted responders. The course is designed to teach lay rescuers the lifesaving skills of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and relief of choking in adults and children. Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use is taught for adults and children. This course teaches participants to recognize and treat emergencies such as cardiac arrest, heart attack, stroke and choking.

Includes AED Hands-On Practice with the exact AED model you have onsite; troubleshooting your specific AED machine; one-to-one mentoring and feedback. The AED Targeted Responder course will cover the use of an AED, special conditions and problem solving.

The course is designed for those who volunteer to become Targeted Responders within their business or organization(s). 

Audience: Targeted Responders

Time required: 8 hours + 3 hours

This course combines adult and child CPR along with the recognition and treatment of medical emergencies and traumatic injuries.  Modules include shock, bleeding and wound care, burns, head and spinal management along with diabetic emergencies, seizures, asthma and allergic reactions. Course provides the steps for relief of choking for adults and children. During the second day course objectives provide the participant knowledge and skills to assist in resuscitation by performing CPR and use of an automated external defibrillator (AED).

Includes AED Hands-On Practice with the exact AED model you have onsite; troubleshooting your specific AED machine; one-to-one mentoring and feedback. The AED Targeted Responder course will cover the use of an AED, special conditions and problem solving.

The course is designed for those who volunteer to become Targeted Responders within their business or organization(s). 

Audience: Targeted Responders, Workplace Response Team Members

Emergency Trauma Life Support

This is 8-hour program is ideal for front-line rescuers who may be involved in Confined Space Rescue, Construction Safety or Firefighter Rescue. The course focus is on trauma patients in hazardous prehospital environments, who need to be stabilized, treated and possibly moved quickly to a safe area. This is a skills oriented program including skill stations in airway management, patient assessment, extrication & spinal immobilization.

The Emergency Trauma Life Support (ETLS) course is a unique program created in recognition for the real need of frontline rescuers to have training in the handling of trauma patients. It is designed to enhance and increase knowledge and skill in delivering critical trauma care.

This course promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care and helps providers make informed decisions in the field. Participants must have a current First Aid & CPR certificate.
Audience: Targeted Responders, Workplace Response Team Members

Emergency Oxygen Administration and Airway Management Course

This a 4-hour comprehensive safety-oriented course designed to meet the training and continuing education requirements of first responders and the general public.

The objectives of the program are to establish and provide guidelines and protocols in the application and use of oxygen and related delivery systems in emergency patient care situations. Throughout the course, participants increase their familiarity with the concepts, principles and practices of oxygen administration while increasing their level of confidence, competence, and ease of use of oxygen delivery systems.

Skills and competence are further acquired through theoretical and practical components. These include a comprehensive review, reinforcement, and application of basic principles and practices related to efficient airway management and rescue breathing (artificial ventilation).

This course promotes critical thinking as the foundation for providing quality care and helps providers make informed decisions in the field. Participants must have a current First Aid & CPR certificate.

Blood Borne Pathogens

The course helps employers provide a safe and healthy work environment for their employees and minimize the exposure to blood borne pathogens.

Workplace Harassment and Violence Prevention
This course contains the mandatory sexual and workplace harassment, bullying and violence prevention training including supervisor responsibilities and employee complaint procedure.

Fire Extinguisher Safety
This course provides the basic knowledge and skills required to extinguish a small fire. Topics covered in this course include types of fires, fire extinguishers, fire extinguishers agents, operation and procedures.
